Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary....

Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now..............

Pregnancy Boom at Gloucester High

As summer vacation begins, 17 girls at Gloucester High School are expecting babies — more than four times the number of pregnancies the 1,200-student school had last year. Some adults dismissed the statistic as a blip. Others blamed hit movies like Juno and Knocked Up for glamorizing young unwed mothers. But principal Joseph Sullivan knows at least part of the reason there's been such a spike in teen pregnancies in this Massachusetts fishing town. School officials started looking into the matter as early as October, after an unusual number of girls began filing into the school clinic to find out if they were pregnant. By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," the principal says, shaking his head.

The question of what to do next has divided this fiercely Catholic enclave. Even with national data showing a 3% rise in teen pregnancies in 2006 — the first increase in 15 years — Gloucester isn't sure it wants to provide easier access to birth control. In any case, many residents worry that the problem goes much deeper. The past decade has been difficult for this mostly white, mostly blue-collar city (pop. 30,000). In Gloucester, perched on scenic Cape Ann, the economy has always depended on a strong fishing industry. But in recent years, such jobs have all but disappeared overseas, and with them much of the community's wherewithal. "Families are broken," says school superintendent Christopher Farmer. "Many of our young people are growing up directionless."

The girls who made the pregnancy pact — some of whom, according to Sullivan, reacted to the news that they were expecting with high fives and plans for baby showers — declined to be interviewed. So did their parents. But Amanda Ireland, who graduated from Gloucester High on June 8, thinks she knows why these girls wanted to get pregnant. Ireland, 18, gave birth her freshman year and says some of her now pregnant schoolmates regularly approached her in the hall, remarking how lucky she was to have a baby. "They're so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally," Ireland says. "I try to explain it's hard to feel loved when an infant is screaming to be fed at 3 a.m."

The high school has done perhaps too good a job of embracing young mothers. Sex-ed classes end freshman year at Gloucester, where teen parents are encouraged to take their children to a free on-site day-care center. Strollers mingle seamlessly in school hallways among cheerleaders and junior ROTC. "We're proud to help the mothers stay in school," says Sue Todd, CEO of Pathways for Children, which runs the day-care center.

But by May, after nurse practitioner Kim Daly had administered some 150 pregnancy tests at Gloucester High's student clinic, she and the clinic's medical director, Dr. Brian Orr, a local pediatrician, began to advocate prescribing contraceptives regardless of parental consent, a practice at about 15 public high schools in Massachusetts. Currently Gloucester teens must travel about 20 miles (30 km) to reach the nearest women's health clinic; younger girls have to get a ride or take the train and walk. But the notion of a school handing out birth control pills has met with hostility. Says Mayor Carolyn Kirk: "Dr. Orr and Ms. Daly have no right to decide this for our children." The pair resigned in protest on May 30.

Gloucester's elected school committee plans to vote later this summer on whether to provide contraceptives. But that won't do much to solve the issue of teens wanting to get pregnant. Says rising junior Kacia Lowe, who is a classmate of the pactmakers': "No one's offered them a better option." And better options may be a tall order in a city so uncertain of its future. —

Holy crap! The world of Homestar Runner is coming to WiiWare, courtesy Telltale Games.

Yes, Telltale's super-secret episodic WiiWare game has finally been revealed, and it goes by the name of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, or SBCG4AP.

While it won't be a WiiWare launch game, the first installment will hit the Wii's game download service in June. Five episodes total will be released monthly over the course of the "season."

Telltale said that pricing and launch date details will be revealed later.

More details about the games, courtesy Telltale, are below. Screenshots and such will come later today, and Game|Life will have hands-on impressions of SBCG4AP next week.

So, Kenzi asked me to make a peacock muff for her neice. Of course I was up to the challenge, and got right down to thinking up ideas on construction. I have some ideas in my head, but I can't seem to get them out onto paper or onto the pc. Mainly b/c I'm thinking of some fancy embroidering or something along those lines. I went fabric shopping the other day, and here are the spoils of the day:

Just when I thought I couldn't not-like Bush any more than I do now.. He's trying to pass a bill to allow the slaughter of over 600 wolves in the Yellowstone area, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST. Here's the 'reasoning':

"The government can kill wolves because of a special exception to the Endangered Species Act known as the “10(j) rule.” Reintroduced species like the Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolf are managed differently than other endangered species. They are considered “experimental populations,” and government agencies are allowed more leeway in managing them, including using lethal control."

Experimental populations??? That is the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. What's the point in putting an animal on the endangered species list if Bush is going to randomly decide to blast them into extinction??

And then there's this:
"Under the new rule, the killing could start as soon as this winter. The government’s plan to revoke endangered species protection altogether is expected next year. "

I disliked him before, now I full on HATE him. If he goes through w/this, I hope Cheney goes on one of the ground hunts w/him and shoots him in the face.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

So, here's my (spoiler-filled) thoughts on the seventh and final installment in the HP saga.. Would have posted it right after reading, but I had to take some breaks to cry and such, and was trying desperately to talk to anyone else who had read it. So far, no luck.

I was pretty proud of myself for being right on many of the predictions I had made on what would happen; R.A.B, Kreacher being the one that helped him, Snape being good, Tonks/Lupin dying, Harry being a Horcrux, both of my reasons for why Dumbledore wanted Snape to be the one to kill him..

I was wrong about Harry being the heir of Gryffindor, but that was really the only main thing. And it's funny, as I was reading HBP, I knew there would be something going on w/the tiara, but it didn't cross my mind that it would be a horcrux until after Harry asked what a diadem was.

I have to admit I was disappointed that Crookshanks and Trevor didn't appear at ALL. It just seems weird that she kept rehashing the getaway attempts of Trevor over and over again for it to have meant nothing.

I'm glad that Fred was the only Weasley to go (though I didn't want him to, and I cried for it), but I think Rowling kinda wussed out on the number of ppl who actually died. Seriously, the body count was almost nill in the grand scheme of what was happening. Hedwig caught me off guard, and I hated her for doing that. Had to take a 20 minute break to cry and recover. Snape was pretty much inevitable, though I did cry for a good couple of hours after the chapter w/the pensieve... Lily seemed almost insensitive to me. I know she wouldn't, but I wish Rowling would write a book about Snape, and James and Lily, and Sirius and Lupin, and their school years.

It almost seemed towards the end at times that Harry and Luna might have ended up together (which I would have preferred to Ginny), had it not been for Ginny. I was worried when they went to visit Xeno Lovegood that Luna was dead, I had that feeling the instant her father opened the door and was all a mess, it was obvious something was wrong. Esp when he said she was down by the stream, that was an obvious clue.

Ginny just was a waste of space. She contributed nothing to the battle, or to the story in general. Rowling messed up in terms of her, she shouldn't have made her so important in HBP only to leave her in the dust for the last chapter. It would have been a better story to kill her off, even, then she would have at least done SOMETHING important.

I really liked that the house elves got to fight at the end. I loved Kreacher, and it made me misty when he talked about Voldemort making him drink the potion, and how Regulus drank it the second time around, and then Harry giving him the locket.. I thought it was so cute, him running around cooking and making sure everyone was ok. I was worried for him when Yaxley ended up in Grimmauld Place, I thought he might get hurt/killed. It was perfect that he was the one to lead the elves into battle at the end, esp after what happened to Dobby (que another cry-break).

Finally.. the dreaded last chapter. HOLY CRAP did it make me mad, for the sheer fact that it was a total bomb. It took away from the credibility of the story, and series, as a whole. It was completely unnecessary. From the thoughts of someone who has been a Harry Potter fan since almost since the very beginning, and has waited and hoped for this book for so many years.. that chapter was like a slap in the face. It wasn't written for the real fans of the series. It was a neat and nice little wrapped ending that makes little 10 year olds happy and satisfied that everything turns out ok in the end. BLEH. Honestly, this wasn't my favorite book of the series (it might have been HBP), although the chapter on Snape was my favorite chapter in the series.

Revised thoughts on Half-Blood Prince

So, I reread HBP from start to finish last night, and I'm ashamed to say, that upon finishing it, I came in here and tried to find the 7th book online (apparently some guy who worked at a walmart or something opened up the book, and took pictures of the pages w/his DIGITAL CAMERA). I'm so impatient! I have the book preordered for Friday, and I can't wait. It's like when I was younger, at Xmas time I would find/unwrap my presents when no one was home, even if it was only a day or two before. I can't help it, I like to find stuff out. I'm not nosy or anything, I'm just curious, I like to know things. I keep going back and forth on this though, I REALLY REALLY want to wait and just read it, but I'm going INSANE wanting to know, especially knowing that the information is already out there!

Anyway, here are my old/new/revised thoughts on HBP, and what I feel is going to happen in Deathly Hallows (In other words, not even close to a spoiler, unless you're some kind of freak who hasn't read HBP):

-Right before turning 17, the Durselys are going to say -something- about Dumbledore (how could they not, esp since he was in their house the last time they saw Harry), and Harry's going to get pissed, and there's going to be a brawl. Harry's going to find out some important info on Lily or Lily/James from Petunia.

-R.A.B.. Regulus Black. I think it's definitely him, and I think Kreacher was the one that helped him get the locket, and hide it at Grimmauld Place.

-Horcruxes.. The diary, the ring, the locket, the cup, Nagini.. something Ravenclaw, and something Gryffindor. I've been doing a lot of thinking on this, and while I don't know what the Ravenclaw item might be, I think Harry himself is the Gryffindor horcrux. Dumbledore himself said that the only known Gryff. item (the sword), was safe.. and Harry's parents lived/were killed in Godric's Hollow.. coincidence? I think no. I think Harry is the last heir of Gryffindor. SOO, I think Harry will have to sacrifice himself to kill Voldemort.

-The whole 'you've got your mother's eyes' thing plays into that, I think.. maybe Lily was a descendant of Gryff, and that's what the importance of her eyes being passed on to Harry is..

-Trevor. There's more to this frog than has been let on. He's ALWAYS making a point to escape, and is found roaming around different areas of the castle/grounds. I don't think he's an animagus, but I think there's a secret to him.

-Crookshanks.. it's not just b/c I love the furry guy, but I think he still has a big part to play. We know he's part kneazle, but that hasn't been delved into very much.

-I'm still convinced many of the Weasleys will die. Probably Molly and/or Arthur. I have a feeling Fred/George, and possibly Percy will as well. I don't think Bill will die, as he was already mauled badly. I think Ginny and Ron are safe, and Charlie could go either way, since he hasn't been discussed that much.

-I think Neville will die, fighting Bellatrix (obvious, I know, but I think he'll kill her, then he'll somehow die). Not until after we find out what Trevor's been up to, though.. my hunch is he's been looking for something/someone in the castle.

-Tonks and/or Lupin. So many other members of the Order have died, I think they're on the list too. Plus, w/Bill & Fleur's wedding, there couldn't be TWO weddings.

-Other ppl to die: Hagrid, Luna, random Professors.. Fenrir by the hand (literally, if not physically) of Peter Pettigrew..

-The big one. Yep, Snape. I've changed my view on this one. Originally I thought he had gone bad, but will redeem himself in DH. Now after rereading HBP, I don't think he went bad at all, but was still acting upon Dumbledore's orders. I think Dumbledore was pleading w/Snape to kill him, 1. so that Malfoy wouldn't have to and have blood on his hands, 2. so that Malfoy wouldn't be killed (or Snape for that matter, from the Unbreakable Vow), 3. he wanted to Snape to kill him and not the other Death Eaters. If Snape was really bad, I think he'd have done something worse than the Avada Kedavra.. Fenrir was ready to maim him to death, for crying out loud.

More thoughts on Ginny.. they really f'd up in terms of Ginny in the OotP film. They portrayed her as nothing more than a little side character who acts/looks/seems to be about 11 years old, and childish. How the hell is that going to translate to the next movie, when she's supposed to be making out w/guys all over the place, and to have been dating someone seriously throughout OotP? Huge plot hole in the fact that they didn't mention that she and Michael were dating, let alone the fact that when they broke up, he ended up w/Cho. They made it seem like Harry and Cho ended up together at the end. That's going to make NO sense come the next film. And all Hermione kept going on about in the movie was Cho, she didn't mention at all how Ginny was in love w/Harry. Gar.
